Europe's first summer casino

Europe's first summer casino

To address this new clientele in the mid-1920s, Eugène Cornuché – visionary promoter and founder of the Deauville casino – suggested to Mayor André Capron the idea of building Europe’s first summer casino in Cannes. It would be named "Palm Beach Casino", in reference to the wealthy Florida beach town. A mad caper in the roaring ’20s!

Reconstruction and restoration

Somber years followed for the establishment. It was initially closed, and then it was requisitioned by German troops, who only left after emptying the cellars. The Palm Beach exposed its scars at the French Liberation: the casino rooms had been ransacked and the roof had been bombed on 7 August 1944. The swimming pool was also damaged in several places.

The pool, the new "place to be"

Fifteen years later, in 1964, the establishment’s swimming pool appeared in the movie Any Number Can Win (Mélodie en sous-sol in French). The cast included Jean Gabin and Alain Delon, but the Palm Beach was the true star. The pitch? A casino hold-up that goes wrong. Henri Verneuil’s camera captured the beauty of the building’s gambling halls, rooftops, and especially swimming pool, revealing it to the whole world. The film’s poolside conclusion is an open-air chess game between the Esterel mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. The scene left an enduring impression on viewers.
